The Uptown Theatre Napa is a classic 1930s theatre, which is evident upon arrival. The neon marquee front and center gives you an immediate feel for the history and charm of the theatre before you even walk through the doors. Inside, the authentic art deco motif will make you feel as if you have stepped back into the 1940s. You’ll be so immersed, you’ll hardly notice the modern-day sound and light systems, until showtime, that is.
In the early days, the venue was just for music and live theatre performances. Eventually, the Uptown Theatre Napa began showing movies and had an opening night that you would expect for a Golden Era Hollywood premiere. The first screening was Ever Since Eve starring Robert Montgomery and Marion Davies. Stars of old like Clark Gable and Carol Lombard made frequent visits to the theatre as they made their rounds of Northern California, giving it that Hollywood appeal. Throughout numerous management changes the theatre was divided into two, and then four showing rooms. It was even converted to an independent art film theatre, which proved to be unsustainable. Finally, in the ’90s, it was restored to its single viewing and art deco styles and turned into a live music venue that is a favorite of locals and tourists alike.
