One of the best things about visiting a new town is discovering special places that are off-the-beaten-path. It may surprise you to know that Napa Valley has a number of these gems where you can experience the best of the region without the crowds. One example is the Skyline Wilderness Park in Napa. It’s a wonderful spot to enjoy a picnic, as well as hit the trails for hiking or biking. No matter which activity you choose, you’ll be rewarded with incredible views of the dramatic California landscape.
With more than 25 miles of trails to hike and bike, the Skyline Wilderness Park is an incredible place to spend a day. However, if you’re looking for even more adventure, check out our free Vacation Guide. It’s full of our top recommendations for things to do in Napa Valley including restaurants, wineries and other outdoor activities.
Skyline Wilderness Park is located just 10 minutes from Churchill Manor in the town of Napa. This unique park was acquired by the state in 1979 when the Napa State Hospital decided they weren’t going to develop it. Instead of developing it themselves, the state heeded the requests of a resident coalition that lobbied to have the land preserved. The group won the state over by proposing that the park would be completely volunteer-run. The park continues to be largely community-run.
You can plan to spend an entire afternoon – or a full day – at Skyline Wilderness Park. It spans 850 acres and offers more than 25 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Challenge yourself and hike to the summit of Sugarloaf Peak 1,630 feet) or Rim Rock Trail (900 feet) to enjoy panoramic views of Mount St. Helena and the San Francisco Bay. Other famous sights along the various trails are a cave-dwelling ruin, many old stone walls, and the gorgeous Lake Marie.
After hiking, try some disc golf, archery, or even a leisurely walk through the Martha Walker Native Habitat Garden. The garden spans 3 acres and includes a variety of native plants and plenty of inspiration for your home garden.
You’re sure to work up an appetite. Go prepared with a picnic lunch that you can enjoy in any of the grassy areas, beside a bubbling creek, or one of the designated picnic spots. We recommend stopping by one of the local delis on your way to the park to pick up a packed lunch. The Oxbow Public Market has several places where you can grab a meal-to-go such as the Fatted Calf, the Model Bakery, the Five Dot Ranch and Cookhouse, and more.
Churchill Manor is just 10 minutes, about 3 miles, from Skyline Wilderness Park.
