What Is the Old Faithful Geyser of California?

This magical spouting water stream was deemed one of only 3 faithful geysers in the world. Its eruptions are steady and predictable, which has made it one of the most visited places in the western United States. Geysers are geological wonders requiring the perfect storm of energy, fault lines, heat and water sources, and Calistoga has the perfect combination for an awe-inspiring natural wonder. Old Faithful has also proven itself an earthquake predictor, as when its eruptions have become delayed or diminished in the past a quake has happened within a 500-mile radius.

Old Faithful Geyser Facts

Before California was settled by Europeans and Americans from the East, the Old Faithful Geyser of California was known among Native American tribes to have healing properties. The Wappos used the water to heal tired and aching muscles, and the surrounding mud to treat bee stings and sunburns. In the 1930s hot mineral therapy pools were constructed with lava rocks indigenous to the area, and their ruins are still on-site today. The word spread about the “Legend of the Healing Waters,” and people would travel to relax in sweat lodges, soak in natural pools and enjoy the beautiful views of Mount Saint Helena.
