5 Beautiful Wineries in Napa Valley

You may wonder why Napa Valley has become such a mecca for wine lovers. The secret is the climate. Only 2 percent of the entire globe is home to a Mediterranean climate that is known as being amenable to high-end grape production. The Napa Valley climate falls into that 2 percent of the world’s Mediterranean areas, making it the perfect place for a flourishing wine industry, as well as a wonderful place to come visit.

And now, 5 of the most beautiful wineries in Napa you need to visit!

Hess Collection Winery & Art Museum

When you plan an excursion to the Hess Collection, you will need to be sure to allow plenty of time to experience all that this winery has to offer! Hess does not have the lengthy history many others do in Napa, however, it makes up for that with its wine, culinary and visitor programs for which they have earned international recognition.

It all began in 1978 when a man with a vision bought a large parcel of land on Mount Veeder in Napa, California and pursued his dream – building a world-class winery that mingled both culinary prowess and the arts. Known as the Hess Collection Winery & Art Museum, this land has been transformed into a beautiful wildlife sanctuary, vineyard, and destination for visitors from around the world. With tastings, tours, and a fine dining chef pairing the wines with only the best locally sourced products with, you can make a lovely day trip of visiting the Hess Collection. Don’t forget to explore their free modern art museum while there.

Castello di Amorosa

One of the most amazing things about Castello di Amorosa is the building itself – a 13th-century Tuscan-style castle located right here in Napa Valley. Following 14 years of construction, Dario Sattui opened Castello di Amorosa in April of 2007.

Situated in the hills above Calistoga, Castello di Amorosa – a family-owned business – produces world-class wines including popular white and red wines as well as proprietary Italian-inspired blends, including Il Barone, La Castellana, and Il Passito. Wines are sold only at the winery.  The castle winery was made with brick, wood and iron imported from Europe and combined with over 8,000 tons of local Napa Valley stone.  Today, Castello di Amorosa, a popular Napa Valley destination, offers a variety of Napa Valley wine tastings and winery tours in a unique Tuscan castle setting.

Sterling Vineyards

Like so many others, Sterling Vineyards offers an array of delicious wines. Unlike them, however, Sterling Vineyards offers one-of-a-kind solar-powered aerial gondola rides to its hilltop location.  The winery itself is modeled after the architecture on the Greek island of Mykonos and contains multiple art galleries, along with motion-activated flat-screen televisions leading you through self-guided tours.

One of the vineyard’s most popular Napa winery tours is the Sterling Silver Experience, which allows you to enjoy a seated wine tasting experience with limited release wines. After the tasting, you’ll get special access to the upper level of the winery where the Sterling Art Collection is located. This opportunity to view original pieces by Picasso, Chagall, Renoir and Ansel Adams will be just as memorable as the wine.

Robert Mondavi

If you’re looking for a spot where you can get an overview of many of the wines produced in Napa Valley, and their story from wine to bottle, the Robert Mondavi Winery is a great place to get an all-encompassing experience, and certainly one of the best wineries in Napa Valley. With tastings and tours offered daily, the Kalon Tasting Room is one of the most famous in the Valley and offers an experience as educational as the tour of the vineyards. Once owned by the original owner of the Churchill Manor, Edward Churchill, the Robert Mondavi Winery is recognized as one of the first growth vineyards of the world and one of the best wineries in Napa Valley.

Hall Napa Valley

Hall Napa Valley offers two opportunities to experience this beautiful winery – one in St. Helena and another in Rutherford. Wines produced at the two locations are made with grapes grown in its five estate vineyards in Napa Valley as well as grapes sourced from more than 130 vineyards in the region.

To get a sense of the character behind the label, a visit to the St. Helena Visitor Center is a must. Hall’s signature tour and tasting (offered daily) allows you to stroll the 33-acre property and lush gardens while you learn about the winery’s history and Old World charm and the significance of the modern architecture on this 150-year-old site. You’ll also be treated to a private seated tasting with the added bonus of breathtaking views of the Mayacamas Mountains and the historic Bergfeld Vineyard.

You also need to be sure to visit Hall’s Rutherford location, as well. This high-tech facility opened in 2005 to produce small lots of red wine. Its featured tour is the Appellation Exploration. During this guided adventure, you’ll experience the 100-year-old Sacrashe vineyard and gain insight into the winemaking approach, as well as taste some of their outstanding small-lot wines paired with delicious small bites.
