During the mid-late 1800s, settlers in search of a new beginning made their way out west. Many came to California in search of gold. Others came with plans to work the land and establish an agricultural (or in this case viticultural) tradition that would sustain their family for generations.
The ancestors of Dan Capp actually did both. The Capp family history begins with a man named David Hudson and includes adventures during the Gold Rush as well as well as the literal planting of roots in the fertile Napa Valley soil. Hudson’s vineyard (in what is now St. Helena) was a big success and produced fruit that was used in Napa Valley’s first winery Charles Krug in 1861.
While the Hudson vineyard was eventually sold to the Beringer family, the Hudson legacy lives on four generations later in Dan Capp and his wife Marguerite. In 1973, more than 100 years after David Hudson planted his vineyard, Dan and Marguerite planted their own and have been growing world-class grapes as well as making world-class wines.
Napa Valley’s “Mediterranean climate” and soil conditions are perfect for grape production. The Capp Heritage Vineyard consists of a few different soil types and microclimates. As a result, different types of grapes are planted depending on the conditions. Currently, the vineyard produces five varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Barbera, and Sangiovese.
Capp Heritage grapes have been used in the production of numerous labels through the years, including many household names. But in 2010, the Capp family began producing their own wines as a way to let their own grapes shine in delicious varietals that captured the essence of Capp Heritage. Taste their Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Barbera, Sangiovese, Malbec Rose, and the Capp Heritage Meritage blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The grapes for all of these wines are grown on the Capp estate. The family also produces three white wines that are from fruit that is sourced: a Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, and a Muscat.
The best place to experience Capp Heritage wines is at their tasting room in Napa. Take a short walk from Churchill Manor Bed & Breakfast on Brown Street to the tasting room on First Street where you’ll feel as if you have stepped back into the 1880s. The decor is a nod to the e VineyardCapp family heritage which began in California in the mid-1880s. It combines the elegance of an old San Francisco hotel lobby with “Steampunk” accents. You’ll see whirling leather belt fans, the original bar from the Noyes Mansion, and even an old brass cash register.
Churchill Manor Guest Tip: Be sure to ask about our two-for-one tasting passes for Capp Heritage at the front desk!
Adjoining the tasting room, is the Deco Lounge, a fantastic place to relax with a delicious glass of wine and listen to live music. The style of the 1920s and 1930s is evident in this aptly-named lounge. Take a moment to notice the art deco statues, light figures, and the 10-foot stained glass light that hangs overhead. Grab a drink, sink into one of the leather chairs in the room or stand near the hammered-copper fireplace when there is a chill in the air. If you happen to stop by in the evenings, the Lounge is a perfect place to enjoy live music!
Speaking of music, nearly every Saturday night, you can enjoy a small-stage concert at the Deco Lounge. Visit the Capp Heritage website to find out the upcoming event lineup of singer-songwriters and musicians!
