The Nichelini Winery – The Beginning

We love a good story as much as we love fine wine and the story of how The Nichelini Winery began is excellent. Homesteaders Anton and Caterina Nichelini were the first Swiss settlers in Napa County’s Chiles Valley. They arrived in 1884 on horseback and quickly became firmly planted in the region. They planted grape vines and olive trees and worked for years to hand-build a stone winery that also included a seven-bedroom house above it. Eventually, the rooms were filled with a large family (12 children!), and word got around about the family’s winemaking skills.

Today

When you visit, you’ll see that the original winery and Roman wine press, as well as the house, are all still standing. The entire operation has remained family-owned for more than 120 years. Their motto is “Generation to Generation,” which is evident in the 5 generations who have developed, refined, and passed on their winemaking knowledge and traditions. The result: World-class, American wines that embody finesse, individuality, and simplicity.

Visit & Taste

The winery is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., or Monday through Thursday by appointment. It is about 40 minutes from Churchill Manor. It’s located 8 miles up into the hills east of the Silverado Trail, past Lake Hennessy and through the scenic cliffs of Sage Canyon Road. Your experience will begin the moment you approach the estate, which is serene and rustic.

The Nichelini wines include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Sirah, Roman Press White, Muscadelle, Sparkling Wine and a Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, to name a few.

Whether you enjoy their wine in the tasting room or in the outdoor space, you’ll love the warm atmosphere and great service by the friendly and down-to-earth staff. Guests say the love of winemaking shows in nearly aspect of this tasting experience.
