History of La Jota Vineyard

In 1898, an immigrant from Switzerland by the name of Frederick Hess purchased 327-acres of land on Howell Mountain with the intention of building a winery. The main building was constructed using volcanic ash rock found on the property, and Hess’ first fermentation barrels came from a stand of nearby coastal redwoods.

When the Prohibition hit, La Jota and many other of Hess’ vineyards fell victim to the collapse of wine production, and the vineyard was left empty for half a century.

Finally, in 1974, former oilman Bill Smith purchased the “ghost” winery and re-purposed it into the La Jota Vineyard Co. that we know and love today. The winery continues to carry on the century-old La Jota winemaking tradition and produces delicious wines crafted from the grapes that are grown right on-site.

Mouthwatering La Jota Wine Selections

While La Jota only produces four varieties of red wine, you can be assured that the small selection size only means the winemakers can spend more time giving each individual wine the attention that it deserves.

Here is a quick look at their wines and what makes each one so incredibly irresistible.

2015 Cabernet Sauvignon: This mid-palate weight wine boasts an earthy tannic structure with hints of dark chocolate, espresso, toast, and Petit Verdot.
La Jota Merlot: The 2015 Merlot encompasses all that is mountain Merlot with a structure to relish. Notes of espresso, dark chocolate, and toast follow ripe blackberry, minerality, and weight on the palate.
2015 Cabernet Franc: The wine has an approachable minerality followed by herbal aromatics. You’ll also be sure to notice notes of anise, blackberry, and black tea that are carried by an impressive mouthfeel and long drawn out finish.
La Jota W.S. Keyes Vineyard Merlot: This wine, made to honor Howell Mountain vineyard pioneer W.S. Keyes, comes from some of the most highly prized Merlot vineyard land in the country. It shows richly-textured notes of black cherry, dark chocolate, espresso bean and kirsch that capture the classic La Jota combination of intense fruit and mineral complexity.

Judd’s Hill Winery is a family-owned business that has been around since the 1970s! Much like La Jota, they are a small production winery that crafts only 3,000 cases per year. However, this leaves room for them to create high-quality, fruit-driven varietals that linger on the palate, are food-friendly, and certified Napa Valley Green.
